Akseki-Ibradi / Manavgat / ANTALYA Eyl 21

North of Antalya Bay, Akseki is located on the north shore and Ibradi on the south shore of the Melas (Manavgat) River, at an altitude of 1000 m.

Akseki is along the ancient road which began in Alanya, passing through Kenya to reach Cappadoccia in the north; and tbradi is along another ancient road, following the same route. Today Ibradi is very distant from todays highways; while Akseki is relatively closer. Therefore, these two regions are now deprived of the significant income they were once receiving from trade…

Scarcity of water and barren land have forced the residents to immigrate to the other regions and the villages are gradually becoming abandoned.

Each of these two districts has genuine characteristics, while they have common features in settlement and architecture. The houses, built by timber; stones and horizontal beams located on the inside and outside of the walls, using no mortar are resistant to earthquakes. These small towns and villages have very systematic networks of street made of cobblestones. Stones also have significant importance in the flooring of the gardens.

Original minarets, found in almost every settlement, are now under protection. With the initiative of Çekül Vakfı (a Turkish foundation), the village houses are being restored… Ormana (Erymna), located south of Ibradi, is one of the settlements where old houses have been kept well preserved.

Altinbesik Cavern, a favorite for cavern enthusiasts, is near the Unulla (Urunlu) Village of Ibradi.

Eynif Plain, south of Ibradi; Tolhan, on the ancient road between Antalya and Konya; Gembos Plain, northwest on the same road, and Ortapayam Caravansary – built on Roman ruins in Gembos Plain; are also well worth seeing…

30 km north of Akseki and on the road connecting Alanya to Konya is Nodar Caravansary. The ruins of antique roads and bridges and cedar woods, suitable for trekking can also be found along this route.

One of the characteristics of the region is the abundance of plants with bulbs. The home land of the flower, Galantus, known as Karde-len (Snowdrop), is in the Taurus Mountains, in the regions of Akseki, Ibradi and Gündoğmuş.

These two districts, which may be easily reached from Side and Alanya, have features which provide genuine touristic services, and offer intact natural and historical beauty.
